MARTY CORDOBA

MARTY CORDOBA

Transmutation

Marty Cordoba’s ceramic works are representative of small sublime universes which are open to interpretation and simultaneously resemble post-apocalyptic, alien-like structures. His previous work involved creating sculptural forms out of melted confectionary which moved between the boundaries of the horrible and the beautiful, at the same time reflecting bodily fluids and food-like substances. With an increasing desire to experiment with a material which was more permanent in nature, Cordoba moved into the practice of ceramics, finding an aesthetic connection texturally between the work which he previously produced through the varying forms, colours and experimental results produced.

Many of the pieces in this exhibition are the result of a ten week artist residency which Cordoba undertook at the Cotto Ceramic Studio in Lima, Peru from the 9th of July to the 16th of September 2018. His aim throughout the residency was to expand upon and experiment with his ideas, utilizing a variety of new techniques and materials which he did he not readily have access to in Australia. During this time he produced a large array of new works utilizing liquid porcelain, a variation of different types of clay and different firing methods including the utilization of gas kilns and reduction firings. The exhibition also includes pieces made in Sydney from 2017-2019, including most recently at Kil.n.it Experimental Ceramics Studio located in Glebe.
