Traversing the here and now

Traversing the here and now presents a collection of monotypes which document and record the self within the now. The now being that precise second of passing time which is captured through a mark or gesture, creating an embodiment of a moment.

This series began as part of an examination of how a practice of mark-making and recording can both document and situate oneself within the here and now.

This research and practice came about through the realization that the action of art making for me was a refuge and escape from the chaos of the current modern culture surrounding and overwhelming me. The constant rush and urgency in the everyday was stilled and calmed when in the studio. Mimicking the pace when submerged in nature, the action of mark-making evokes this slowing. A concentration of the insignificant movements and happenings around me, which are continual and constant without the interference of self, allowed for this escape. From this comes the meditative state of the self within this space. A sensory engagement of the components of the everyday which go by unnoticed.
