Down By The River

This exhibition of photographs explores the history of Cooks River, Goolay’yari, since colonisation. The river was the backdrop to brutal and dramatic early conflicts but has also endured horrible abuse that has changed it beyond its original state.

It is no longer as it was, and it never will be. It is now a composite of what was originally there, both existing as a natural, culturally significant estuary and an industrialised polluted byway.

The images created down by the river are composite analogue prints made using layered photographic transparencies. Each individual image was made at a site along the river and references a specific event, and then it is paired together with another. This creates a scene that exists only in the end photograph. Like the river itself, the images are composites that now only exist through deliberate interference.
